#1 Safety First

When you start dating online you must be conscious of your safety. One way to do that is to not offer any personal information such as your phone number, address, or any other information that would help someone locate you without your permission. The only time you should ever offer up any personal info is after you feel comfortable with the person you are talking with and ready for a first date. Even then, make sure your first date is in a "public setting" and possibly with a friend. At the very minimum tell other friends where you will be and give them a "call in" time to check in with you during the date to make sure everything is ok.
